Literacy Learning

At Patterson Lakes Primary School, we know that if students are confident readers and writers, this will support them to become successful, lifelong learners, capable of walking down any path for their future.

Our Early Years Literacy Program follows the Science of Learning, and teachers implement a Multisensory Structured Learning Program (MSL-OG) that helps all students crack the reading code, building fluency and comprehension skills.

Using a synthetic, systematic approach to teaching reading ensures all students know how to read, before exploring our wider Integrated Curriculum. Our term-based units aim to support students into becoming active, responsible members of Patterson Lakes Primary, contributing to the school and our wider community in meaningful ways.

In the senior years, students are guided to read and examine more complex topics through the support and expertise of their teachers. Together, they unpack historical novels, non-fiction texts and write responses, demonstrating their developing mastery. Texts such as Stormboy, The Rabbits, The Night We Stormed Eureka and Blueback build a historical and geographical understanding of our land and country, and what we can do both as individuals and a community to grow.

This call-to-action style learning, allows all students the opportunity to demonstrate our three key values of Integrity, Respect and Excellence. Most importantly however, our students become more readily equipped for success now, and in their future.
